YouTube, other online video channels help minorities launch entertainment careers – Orange County Register

Undiscovered and snubbed by music executives, singer AJ Rafael found success posting his own music videos on YouTube.

When he first began performing more than a decade ago, he had initially tried the traditional route. He went on “American Idol,” but got shot down. He performed at local colleges and small venues, hoping some music executive would “discover him” and swoop in to give him a record deal. Nothing materialized.

“I tried, but I never had the opportunity,” said Rafael, a Riverside resident. “I felt like they weren’t looking for people like me – an Asian-American singer.”
