Wisconsin linebacker Jack Cichy will miss the entire 2017 season after injuring his knee in practice this week.

The school announced Thursday the senior would need surgery to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament.

One of the top linebackers in the country, Cichy was expected to lead the No. 10 Badgers defense. He was an honorable mention Big Ten selection last season after 60 tackles, while being limited to seven starts due to a torn pectoral.

“You hate it for Jack,” Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said in a statement released by the school. “You only get so many chances to play this game and you never want to see a guy miss any of those opportunities. He’s one of the leaders of our team and I know he’ll be a big part of what we do moving forward this season.”
