STAR TREK: DISCOVERY 8:30 p.m. on CBS. This long-awaited iteration of the “Star Trek” franchise is set a decade before the original series of the 1960s. The crew answers to Starfleet First Officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green, “The Walking Dead”), a protégé of Spock’s father, the Vulcan Ambassador Sarek. In an interview with The New York Times, one of the creators, Alex Kurtzman, said this series could “live in the nuance and moral quandary that you don’t have time for in the films.” Episodes after the first will be available on the network’s streaming service, CBS All Access.

The subject matter is a lot to tackle, and while the documentary doesn’t offer many clarifying details, Ken Jaworowski wrote in The Times, “Mr. Barker doesn’t disregard the frustration and confusion that go hand-in-hand with bravery and dedication.”
BALLERS 10 p.m. on HBO; also on HBO streaming platforms. Spencer (Dwayne Johnson) and Joe’s (Rob Corddry) shaky plan to move the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas looks up in this Season 3 finale. Ricky (John David Washington)…
