“Westworld” star Evan Rachel Wood is proud that she was able to correctly guess the huge Season 1 twist about young William (Jimmi Simpson) eventually growing up to become the Man in Black (Ed Harris) even before they filmed the finale scene.
This Season 2, Wood is proud to say that she was able to do the same thing even though they’re only halfway done filming. “It’s a lot like last season — I figure it out, but they don’t fill in the blanks for me,” she told Vulture. “Usually I’m like, ‘Okay, I think I have an idea of where this is going,’ and then the payoff is always so incredible, so much bigger than I could ever imagine.”
Wood believes the same goes for the audience who were able to correctly guess whatever secrets the show has in store. “You’re supposed to figure out the show, and even if you do, it’s okay because the payoff will always be way more than you could ever dream up. So I did kind of talk to one of the showrunners and say, ‘Okay, tell me if I’m going in the right direction. Is it this?’ and they said, ‘Stop bugging the writers room! Don’t tell this to anyone!’ I was like, ‘Okay! Okay!’” she said.
Next season, all Wood can say about her character, Dolores Abernathy, is that she’s finally “awake” and will not let park guests bully her around anymore. “She’s a very different, different character — with still the essence of who she was, but awake,” she said.
Meanwhile, Thandie Newton’s Maeve Millay will continue her courageous streak in Season 2. She almost got out of the park during the Season 1 finale, but she changed her mind at the last minute and went back to the park to save her daughter as well.
Newton told Deadline that it was a costly decision for Maeve to make, and she is honestly terrified for her character. “In Season 2, we’re going to see her going back into the world that she has abandoned, which felt to me like an incredibly courageous and ultimately rebellious choice,” she said.
Since Maeve was informed by Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright) that everything she has done, such as plot an escape from the park, was programmed by Delos, Newton said it felt very disturbing knowing that her mind is not her own. So her act of defiance, such as forsaking her freedom from the park, felt truly liberating albeit terrifying.
“Westworld” Season 2 premieres on HBO in spring 2018.
