Lift your nose and sniff. What do you smell? The return of the LA County Fair and its myriad food booths.
From burgers and Texas brisket to vegan tacos and non-dairy ice cream, it’s another creative year for the fair, which runs Sept. 1-24 at Fairplex in Pomona.
I know that people come to the fair for lots of reasons. They may be interested in livestock — full-sized and miniature — floral, fabric or edible contest entries, the Mexican village, big name evening concerts or recreating their own ending of “Grease.” But for many, eating what you don’t get at home is a big lure.
We sampled the new food items for 2017 so you can have an idea before plunking down your cold, hard cash on deep-fried goodies and more.
Let us start at Chicken Charlie Boghosian’s stand. This year’s newest star was the unconventional fried chicken with ice cream between halves of a Krispy Kreme doughnut garnished with Fruity Pebbles. It tasted great!
Or, you could have opted for the vanilla ice cream sandwiched between the pink and blue compressed cotton candy patties. It also came with a Fruity Pebbles garnish.
The third new creation was a burrito filled with funnel cake and garnished with slightly cooked but still firm apple slices, a suggestion of cinnamon and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. And that was yummy, a modern California version of mom’s apple pie.
Peanut butter meatballs are another new offering.
Oddly enough, the “healthiest food” was at Chicken Charlie’s, too. I am always drawn to the half pineapple filled with fresh pineapple chunks, slices of teriyaki chicken or shrimp and a scoop of rice.
