Watch hit Korean boy band BTS perform at the American Music Awards on Sunday – Orange County Register

When the 2017 American Music Awards open on ABC on Sunday night, viewers will see and hear Pink and Kelly Clarkson team up to start the show, followed by performances from Diana Ross and Christina Aguilera, Imagine Dragons and Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas.

But it’s fans of BTS, a Korean boy band that is massively popular with millions of fans around the world – yet still not all that familiar to mainstream music fans in the United States – who are going to lose their minds the most on Sunday as the five guys make their American television performance debut.

This is big, people, really, really big. BTS has over 10 million Twitter followers on its main account, and another 7 million on a second one. At the Billboard Music Awards earlier this year, BTS won the award for top social artist. A month or so later, Time magazine named the band one of the 25 most influential people on the internet, a list that also included the likes of J.K. Rowling, Donald Trump, Katy Perry and Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

When the announcement that BTS would make its performance debut on U.S. television dropped on Nov. 3 you can imagine how Twitter exploded. The band’s retweet of the announcement by its record label BigHit Entertainment – which has 4.3 million followers thanks in large part to BTS  – netted hundreds of thousands of retweets, likes and comments like the few that follow here:
