Ever since announcing the groundbreaking of the so-called “first” Cracker Barrel in California, the response from readers has been overwhelming.

The 48-year-old Tennessee-based chain, known for its homestyle comfort food, has a rabid following that rivals fans of In-N-Out Burger. And, like In-N-Out, it appears some savvy entrepreneurs went to great lengths to create copycats.

Southern California fans have balked at the chain’s insistence a new Victorville location will be the first Cracker Barrel in California. Readers have sent emails and have commented on Facebook, recalling how they dined at Cracker Barrel restaurants in Anaheim, Lakewood, Buena Park and San Diego.

They swear it was the same restaurant, which boasted great Southern food and a gift shop. The latter is a mainstay of Cracker Barrel’s identity, as it is known for selling knick knacks along tourist traveled highways in the Midwest and South.

“There was one in Anaheim, off State College when I was a kid…maybe 30 yrs ago,” one reader wrote.
