USC football surges late, tops Cal in road opener – Orange County Register

BERKELEY — USC again poured it on late.

Powered by 17 fourth-quarter points, the fifth-ranked Trojans prevailed in their road opener at California with a 30-20 victory.

A career long 46-yard field goal by Chase McGrath, a freshman walk-on kicker, early in the fourth quarter on Saturday afternoon broke a 13-13 tie. A pair of touchdowns followed to pad their lead.

It was the third time this season that the Trojans needed a late scoring barrage to avoid an upset.
