Anthony Scaramucci replaced Mike Dubke a week and a half ago, after Mr Dubke resigned earlier this month.
The New York Times said three people close to the decision confirmed Mr Scaramucci had been removed from his post.
Just days before, Mr Scaramucci had engaged in a swear word-laden tirade against other senior members of the president’s senior staff.
The White House said Mr Scaramucci will be leaving to give new chief of staff John Kelly a “clean slate”.
In a statement, new press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said: “Anthony Scaramucci will be leaving his role as White House Communications Director.
“Mr. Scaramucci felt it was best to give Chief of Staff John Kelly a clean slate and the ability to build his own team. We wish him all the best.”
Mr Kelly, a former four-star general who fought in Iraq, is believed to have requested Mr Scaramucci’s removal, the sources added, although Ms Sanders refused to comment on “the process, the tick tock”.
The wealthy New York financier had boasted about reporting directly to the president, not Mr Kelly.
During a meeting on Monday morning Mr Kelly made it clear to White House staff he is in charge.
Ms Sanders this evening, added: “Anthony Scaramucci does not have a role at this time in the Trump administration.
“Anthony’s comments were inappropriate for a person in that position and the President didn’t want to burden General Kelly with that line of succession.
“General Kelly has the full authority to carry out businesses he sees fit.
“All staff at the White House will report to General Kelly.
“General Kelly will bring new structure, discipline and strength to the White House.”
Mr Kelly replaced Reince Priebus after the former chief-of-staff offered his resignation following a public spat with Mr Scaramucci.
The now-sacked communications director called Mr Priebus a “f***ing paranoid schizophrenic” during an on-the-record phone call to a New Yorker journalist.
Mr Scaramucci also said Mr Priebus was behind a series of damaging leaks about the White House and claimed he was going to ask the FBI to investigate him.
The interview was only published the next day, last Thursday, and during the intervening hours, Mr Scaramucci claimed he and Mr Priebus were like brothers, albeit like Cain and Abel, the biblical brothers who fight and then Abel is killed by Cain.
Mr Scaramucci also said he was not like Steve Bannon, Mr Trump’s chief strategist, because “I’m not trying to suck my own c***”.
