CARSON >> Even without two of its stars, Toronto FC didn’t show any letdown, Saturday.
However, for the Galaxy, the effort wasn’t up to standards and coach Sigi Schmid closed the doors moments after his post-game availability for a team meeting.
“Main message is guys are playing for their jobs,” Galaxy goalkeeper Jon Kempin when asked what was said during the meeting. “Play for some pride that was the main message.”
Galaxy defender Dave Romney said the message was “pretty frank” in tone.
“When I hear that, I just think I need to play better, I need to be the best version of myself if I want to stay here,” he said. “So it works for me, I don’t know how other people take it, I can’t speak for anyone else, but it motivates me.”
TFC (18-3-8) scored a pair of goals in the first half and added two more in the second to hand the Galaxy a 4-0 defeat in front of 19,650 at StubHub Center, Saturday.
“I thought we were fine through the first 20-25 minutes,” Schmid said. “I thought we carried the game to them. The goal confuses me a little bit. Did they ask for 10 yards? Did they not? Did the referee push us back …anyway its’ a non-attentive goal.”
TFC opened the scoring in the 24th minute on Drew Moor’s header off of Victor Vazquez’s free kick that hit off the crossbar.
Vazquez’s kick seemed to catch the Galaxy off-guard, leading to a late response on Moor’s header.
The teams are at different ends of the spectrum. On one end is TFC. With the victory, even without Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore, the club improved to 62 points as it closes in on the Supporter’s Shield.
For the Galaxy (7-15-6), the loss leaves them on 27 points and unless a miracle happens, all but knocks them out any chances of making the playoffs. The Galaxy is 11 points behind the current final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
“We weren’t good enough,” Schmid said.
In the 37th minute, TFC struck again, this time with Tosaint Ricketts’ nifty toe touch that was just able to elude Kempin and trickle into the goal for a 2-0 lead.
The Galaxy’s chances were few and far between. In the second half, Ashley Cole played a through ball toward Giovani dos Santos, but with the goalkeeper rushing out, he wasn’t able to get the ball on target.
In the 76th minute, Ricketts scored his second game to seal all three points for TFC. Victor Vazquez poured salt into the Galaxy’s wounds with a goal in the 78th minute.
