The Skirball fire, the newest wildfire to take off in the LA-area this week is burning brush, shutting down the 405 and freaking out the students at UCLA.
It’s finals week at the college which is literally across the freeway from the blaze.
Though the air is filling with smoke and some campus buildings are losing power, UCLA isn’t cancelling classes or rescheduling finals.
REVISED: UCLA remains open. Students who are on campus should report to class as normal. Students, faculty and staff off campus should only come if safely able. More at UCLA Newsroom: https://t.co/45kVumFzle

UCLA’s campus is safe. UCLA is not in the fire evacuation zone and no evacuations are anticipated.

The decision has some students worried for their safety.
I’ve been at UCLA for just a little over 2 years and there have been 2 big emergencies (around finals week), yet not once have I felt supported by the campus. They still expect us to take our finals when a lot of us are more concerned for our safety than taking exams.

The fact that I’m sitting here debating on going home or staying here and doing work because it’s finals week when there’s a fire like 4 miles away from my apartment really speaks about the culture of this damn school..

Shame on @UCLA for not closing campus today. Some buildings are losing power. The air is thick with smoke and ash is coating surfaces. I am not proud to be part of an institution that damages the health of its students. #SkirballFire

Others are simply in disbelief that a fire could potentially shut down the school.
spent all year hoping a fire would get me out of class but now its finals week and I NEED that fire to stay on the other side of the highway https://t.co/JDtLXxAIHc
