Tea or Coffee: Which Offers the Greater Health Benefit?

Consumers are often bombarded with advertisements for healthy drinks fortified with vitamins and minerals. Indeed coconut drinks, isotonic drinks and sports drinks are often touted as healthy alternatives to sodas and other sugary beverages. Tea and coffee are two of the most popular beverages throughout the world. Throughout the medical community there are ongoing debates about which beverage is healthiest.

Tea

Medical professionals argue the tea offers drinkers antioxidants which protect the body from free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that are associated with tissue damage and aging. Antioxidants are purported to keep the free radicals at bay which in turn slows down the aging process and prevents diseases including cancer. Tea is also known to eliminate toxins from the body. Medical professionals also point out that various types of teas offer different benefits. Although many consumers enjoy black ice tea, hot lemon tea or ice lemon tea, these might not be the healthiest types of tea. For instance, green tea is believed to have a greater amount of antioxidants than black tea. With this understood, consumers must be aware of the type of tea that they drink so that they can receive the maximum health benefits.

Coffee

Coffee is the most popular beverage in the world. The health benefits associated with coffee include decreases in liver cancer and decreases in the development type-2 diabetes. Like tea, coffee also contains antioxidants which prevent certain diseases. Coffee is also believed to lower depression risks in women and decrease occurrences of Parkinson’s disease. However, there are also reports that suggest that coffee is harmful and acts as a toxin to the body. Studies conducted by Harvard also indicate the coffee prepared with a French press can increase LDL cholesterol levels.
