Sheba Medical Center’s Israel Center for Disaster Medicine and Humanitarian Response Receives Humanitarian Contribution Award

The Israel Center for Disaster Medicine and Humanitarian Response at Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, was honored to receive The Jerusalem Post’s prestigious Humanitarian Contribution Award at the newspaper’s annual Diplomatic Conference on December 6, 2017 in Jerusalem, Israel.

The Israel Center for Disaster Medicine and Humanitarian Response at Sheba Medical Center was established in 2017 by highly experienced specialists in the field to lead the charge in preparing and responding to global humanitarian crises and emergencies.

Through a strategic combination of teaching, training, operational deployment and research, the Israel Center for Disaster Medicine and Humanitarian Response is spearheading a comprehensive and innovative curriculum for responding to mass casualty incidents to share worldwide.

Elhanan Bar-On, renowned orthopedist and the director of the new Israel Center for Disaster Medicine and Humanitarian Response, accepted the award on behalf of Sheba Medical Center during The Jerusalem Post Diplomatic Conference.

During his acceptance speech, Dr. Bar-On remarked, “As an orthopedist, I know a bone is a bone. A broken bone is a broken bone and it doesn’t make a difference if it’s in India or Bnei Barak.”

Humanitarian aid has been a part of Sheba Medical Center’s mission since its establishment in 1948.

Over the years, Sheba Medical Center has initiated successful projects in all fields of medicine, and has collaborated with national and international organizations in underserved regions. These projects include improvement in patient care, bringing complex patients for treatment back to Sheba, and training local personnel on site.

With vast proficiency in responding to mass casualty incidents following terror attacks in Israel, Sheba Medical Center also has a long history of operating during wartime circumstances treating both military and civilian casualties.

A core priority for Sheba Medical Center’s director, Professor Yitzhak Kreiss, is responding to humanitarian crises effectively with the highest standards of medical prudence and crisis leadership.
