The new OC Music and Dance, an Irvine-based nonprofit community arts school, has released its first official music video, starring YouTube sensation Alex Boyé.
The video, filmed on a yacht in Newport Harbor, features young musicians and singers from the school performing Boyé’s rendition of British pop singer Harry Styles’ song “Sign of the Times.”
Boyé, an experienced recording artist who got his start in 1995 in the London-based boy band Awesome, has since gone solo and amassed over 200 million views on YouTube. “I take pop songs and Africanize them” is how Boyé describes his unique brand of music. This, he said, allows him to connect with his Nigerian roots.
“I chose ‘Sign of the Times’ as the song for the students because it has a great message about making the most of the time we have,” said Boyé, who is based out of Utah and plans to work periodically with students at the school. “I felt that was a perfect message for the students in terms of the incredible opportunities that are available through the school and its instructors. They will get out of it as much as they choose to put in.”
The video begins with a violin solo by 9-year-old Cristine Li. The camera then pans the rest of the ship to reveal members of the Southern California Children’s Chorus and the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra, who rehearse and attend classes at the school, and professional musicians from the faculty.
Making this video, which is anticipated to receive millions of YouTube views, was a first for many of the young artists on board the ship that day.
