Construction works are still considered one of Britain’s high risk jobs. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) there were a total of 17.1 total workplace fatalities recorded in 2010-11. Fifty were fatal injuries to construction workers, from which, 18 out of the total number were self-employed.

Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS training) and the Construction Skills Certification Scheme or CSCS are just two of the largest and most highly recognised card schemes in the United Kingdom which aims to check the occupational competency and understanding of the current health and safety practices.
Under this scheme, testers must undergo a wide range of assessment to achieve proof or license that s/he is capable to use different equipment and machinery fittingly while adapting to work site health and safety practices. After completion, the successful applicant will then earn the respective CPCS or CSCS cards which signify that s/he is already adequately suitable for the job.
The mandatory attainment of both the CSCS and CPCS cards greatly provides benefits to both individuals and employers. This offers financial advantage to employers who wish to hire individuals or staff with relevant skills in the construction industry. Plus, the improved employment prospects and the better quality of work eliminate the hassles of having to do on-site plant training themselves. Consequently, there is a guarantee that only qualified and competent workforce is employed.
