FRYER ON FOOTBALL
LAGUNA BEACH (1-0) VS. LA QUINTA (0-0)
Where, when: Bolsa Grande High, Thursday, 7 p.m.
Analysis: Laguna Beach beat the Garden Grove League’s Bolsa Grande, 48-21, last week as quarterback Curtis Harrison passed for 291 yards and five touchdowns. The Breakers play a different, and better, Garden Grove League team this week. La Quinta might be the league’s second-best team, behind Garden Grove. Laguna Beach’s offensive firepower should make the Breakers 2-0.
Winner: Laguna Beach
NO. 11 TESORO (0-1) VS. NO. 13 LA HABRA (0-1)
Where, when: La Habra High, Friday, 7 p.m.
Analysis: Tesoro came very close to beating Edison last week in a 48-47, action-packed opener. La Habra was pasted, 35-7, by Upland. Upland is a good team, ranked No. 2 in CIF-Southern Section Division 2, and that game was at Upland. Tesoro has more confidence and a terrific quarterback, Chase Petersen, and should win this one.
VISTA MURRIETA (0-1) VS. NO. 2 MISSION VIEJO (1-0)
Where, when: Mission Viejo High, Friday, 8 p.m.
Analysis: Vista Murrieta has a fine program, but this is not one of its better teams. Mission Viejo did not play last week after getting a win in Hawaii two weeks ago. The Diablos are tanned, rested and ready for this Brothers In Arms showcase game.
Winner: Mission Viejo
OAKS CHRISTIAN OF WESTLAKE VILLAGE (0-1) VS. NO. 5 EDISON (1-0)
Where, when: Huntington Beach High, Friday, 7 p.m.
Analysis: Oaks Christian lost big to Chaminade of West Hills, 47-10 last week. Chaminade is ranked No. 7 in the state, so that’s not a horrible loss. Still, Oaks Christian might not be the Oaks Christian of some years ago. Edison learned a lot from its 48-47 win over Tesoro last week – like being more ready to play from the opening kickoff – and should be better educated for this one.
NO. 3 ORANGE LUTHERAN (1-0) VS. CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC OF SAN DIEGO (0-1)
Where, when: Cathedral Catholic High, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Analysis: Orange Lutheran started the season strong with a 35-0 win over La Mirada. Cathedral Catholic lost to Del Oro of Loomis, 22-12. Del Oro is ranked No. 20 in the state, so that’s not a bad loss for state No. 22 Cathedral. Orange Lutherans is good, is ranked No. 25 in the state, and might be the third-best team in the Trinity League (that’s a high compliment, friends). But a long road trip…
