Orange Lutheran’s Daube, Molthen don’t mind being everyone’s target – Orange County Register

They’re arguably the most talented duo in high school water polo.

Orange Lutheran seniors Ash Molthen and Hannes Daube have already played for the U.S. junior national team.

The attackers feature some of the hardest shots in the high school ranks but also are gifted passers.

The left-handed Molthen (6-3, 200) patrols one wing while the right-handed Daube (6-5, 215) holds down the opposite flat.

For all their strengths and symbiotic qualities, the pair faces perhaps its greatest challenge this fall: defending the CIF-SS Division 1 title.

“Being the hunted is a totally different animal,” Orange Lutheran coach Steve Carrera acknowledged before a recent practice at Santiago Canyon College. “We have to be ready for everything, every game.”

Last season, the Lancers chased down their first CIF-SS crown, defeating a more-established Huntington Beach team, 9-7, in the final.
