Norman Schwarzkopf dead: Desert Storm commander is survived by his wife Brenda Holsinger and three children

Known popularly as “Stormin’ Norman” for a notoriously explosive temper, General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, who commanded the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein’s forces out of Kuwait in 1991, has passed away at the age of 78. According to a sister, he died in Tampa, Florida city from complications from pneumonia. Schwarzkopf’s commander-in-chief, then-President George H.W. Bush released a statement through his office today to praise his top general. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell also released sympathized comments on Schwarzkopf’s passing. President Barack Obama hailed the service to the nation of the late retired General Norman Schwarzkopf on Thursday. The highly decorated general is survived by his wife, Brenda Schwarzkopf. They were married in 1968 and had three children together. After retiring in 1991, Norman Schwarzkopf wrote an autobiography, advocated for prostate cancer awareness, and lived in Tampa. Funeral arrangements of the former four-star general have not been announced.

The 78-year-old commander, whose wife Brenda Schwarzkopf stood directly behind him, was given a hero’s welcome at MacDill Air Force Base after returning from eight months in the Persian Gulf.

Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, the commander of coalition forces during the Gulf War, was pinned the Medal of Freedom by first lady Barbara Bush while he shook hands with President George H. Bush during a White House ceremony in Washington.
