No longer in a coma, boxer Daniel Franco considering return home to Southern California – Orange County Register

Rancho Cucamonga boxer Daniel Franco, 25, has improved enough from bleeding in his brain that his family hopes he can soon be transported from Iowa to Southern California.

Franco, who was knocked out in the eighth round of a June 10 bout in Sloan, Iowa, was moved out of the intensive care unit Tuesday as he emerges from a medically induced coma.

He had two surgeries to repair bleeding and relieve pressure in his brain in the week following his knockout. He moved for the first time Friday, clinching his fist when a drainage tube was removed from his head.

He was expected to remain at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, for about two months, but is improving at such a rate that his family is now discussing a transport to Riverside Parkview Hospital after a neurosurgeon there agreed to take on Franco as his patient.

“He is improving tremendously,” Al Franco, Daniel’s father and trainer, posted on his son’s GoFundMe page. “One of our doctors said (Tuesday) that Daniel being in the condition he is in is nothing short of a miracle. He wasn’t sure if Daniel would even survive let alone recovering this fast.”

As of Wednesday morning, Franco’s GoFundMe page had raised $40,580 in 10 days with contributions from 517 people. The original goal was to raise $1,000.

A transport from Iowa to Rancho Cucamonga costs $17,240, according to a post on the GoFundMe page by Al Franco.

Daniel Franco’s awareness continues to improve, making a transport increasingly possible. He had all the drainage tubes removed from his head over the weekend and doctors have been lowering the doses of medication in order to slowly bring him out of a medically induced coma.

“He still has a long ways to go but things look positive,” Al Franco said. “Please continue to share, financially this will be huge. Spiritually this is life changing.”
