New Research From RSR: Retailers See The Internet Of Things As A Panacea

Many retailers expect IoT will solve all that ails them – it won’t.

According to RSR’s newest research on the Internet of Things, some incredibly strong business leadership is going to be required if retailers are to get any real value out of IoT technologies in the near future.    

“This is already our third year conducting this research,” said Brian Kilcourse, Managing Partner at RSR and co-author of the report, “and while we’ve seen a small amount of improvement over last year, many retailers still expect IoT will solve all that ails them – it won’t.”

The report contains 17 charts and 24 pages of analysis. Some key findings:


  • The best hope for all retailers is to better “see” – and manage – their existing inventory.
  • Most retailers merely want to make sense of the vast streams of data they are already collecting – this is really just about separating good data from bad.
  • Too many brands whose sales are already struggling see the buzzworthy “IoT” as their saint and savior. Fact remains, many of these technologies aren’t even new. And it will take strong, top-down leadership to derive real value amidst all the noise.
  • Even the best performing retailers lack understanding of what IoT can/will do for them.
