A doctor working at a Midwest City clinic has been charged with five counts of second-degree murder in relation to the deaths of at least five patients, Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter announced Friday.
Dr. Regan Nichols, an osteopathic physician, is accused of knowingly prescribing controlled dangerous substances to patients without a legitimate medical need in quantities and circumstances that are considered an extreme disregard of human life, according to a probable cause affidavit.
The Oklahoma medical examiner’s reports said the five deaths were caused by multi-drug toxicity, officials said.
Investigators learned that the five people who died were prescribed more than 1,800 opioid pills in the same months as their death, officials said. Three were prescribed a deadly three-drug combination of a narcotic opioid pain reliever, an anti-anxiety drug and a muscle relaxer, according to officials.
Nichols signed off on all of the prescriptions, officials said.
Agents with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and the Dangerous Drugs Control Prescription Monitoring Program said that Nichols prescribed an excess of 3 million dosage units of controlled dangerous substances from Jan. 1, 2010, to Oct. 7, 2014, according to officials.
The Oklahoma State Board of Osteopathic Examiners removed Nichols’ authority to prescribe controlled dangerous substances. She voluntarily surrendered her credentials, officials said.
