Mater Dei sounds intentions by dominating Orange Lutheran in South Coast final – Orange County Register

NEWPORT BEACH Mater Dei’s boys water polo team made itself heard loud and clear on multiple channels Saturday in the finals of the South Coast Tournament.

The Monarchs’ players unleashed a roar after most of their thunderous blocks in the field against Trinity League rival Orange Lutheran. They also broadcast their Division 1 candidacy by handling the Lancers, 12-6, at Newport Harbor.

Mater Dei (13-1), ranked second in Orange County and Division 1 to Orange Lutheran (11-1), scored the first three goals followed their defense and goalie Billy Motherway to a victory against the defending Division 1 champion.

Motherway made 12 saves and anchored a zone defense that doubled U.S. national team players Ash Molthen and Hannes Daube. The duo finished with a combined one goal.
