Mater Dei overwhelms St. John Bosco, claims first CIF-SS crown since 1999 – Orange County Register

NORWALK – Mater Dei didn’t just finish its championship business Saturday night. The Monarchs finished with their signature style.

JT Daniels passed for five touchdowns, including three to fellow rising junior Bru McCoy, as Mater Dei captured its first CIF-SS title since 1999 with a 49-24 victory against rival St. John Bosco in the Division 1 final in front of 11,976 at Cerritos College.

The USC-committed Daniels applied the knockout punch seconds into the fourth quarter with a 43-yard touchdown bomb to Amon-Ra St. Brown, who gave the Monarchs (14-0) a 35-17 lead.

As St. Brown chest-bumped with his red-jersey clad teammates and Daniels flexed toward the Braves (11-3), the top-ranked team in the nation began to celebrate a long-sought title, along with a degree of revenge against their Trinity League rival.

In the Division 1 final last season, St. John Bosco spoiled Mater Dei’s perfect season with a 42-28 victory at Angel Stadium.

But this title wasn’t personal business with the Braves. It was about ’99 and winning for Coach Bruce Rollinson, who was drenched by water bottles and the cooler in the final seconds.
