PARIS (AP) — Marseille failed to end a 40-year winless run at Bordeaux on Sunday but finished its trip to the wine country with a 1-1 draw after a stoppage-time goal.
Marseille missed the chance to leapfrog Lyon into third place in the French league.
Chasing a first league victory at Bordeaux since 1977, Marseille suffered from the absence of suspended midfielder Luiz Gustavo, one of the key players in Rudi Garcia’s team this season.
A slack midfield gave Bordeaux striker Nicolas de Preville the chance to put the hosts in front after only three minutes. De Preville intercepted a weak pass from Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, rushed toward the Marseille goal and fired a curled shot past goalkeeper Steve Mandanda. It was his first league goal for Bordeaux, where he signed from Lille this summer.
Marseille, which remained in fourth place one point behind Lyon, pushed hard for an equalizer toward the end. A first chance to level from striker Kostas Mitroglou ended with a fluffed shot over the bar. But Morgan Sanson made no mistake with a low shot from close range deep in stoppage time following a scramble in the box.
Bordeaux has managed only one point from its past four games and stands ninth, eight points behind Marseille.
RODELIN ON TARGET
Caen striker Ronny Rodelin scored a last-minute goal with an acrobatic volley to salvage a 1-1 draw against Nice.
Nice had looked set for a second consecutive win as it attempts to turn around its season. But Rodelin connected with a cross from Romain Genevois at the far post to unleash a superb right-footed effort and secure a point for the hosts. Nice goalkeeper Walter Benitez, who had been decisive on two occasions earlier, failed to keep up with Rodelin’s move.
Despite Yoan Cardinale being fit again, Nice coach Lucien Favre gave Benitez the starting nod in goal. Minutes after denying a well-struck free kick from Rodelin, Benitez saved Ivan Santini’s penalty kick in the 65th minute with a fine dive to his left.
Playing without the suspended Mario Balotelli, Nice failed to produce a second consecutive win after a six-match losing streak in all competitions and sits only two points…
