As we come into the summer months, many of us are gearing up for an active time of vacations and weekend wanderings. It is good to remember invigorating and fulfilling activities are those which, even if they are tiring, produce inner results of peace, harmony, creativity, joy and well-being. When we just frantically pursue something elusive like happiness, or go just to say we’ve been, then even a vacation can be draining. We may end up feeling burnt out – like toast!
Sharing the joy of living while working or playing with other people is one of the most healing and renewing practices I know. Whatever feeds our spirit feeds others. I invite you to bring your whole spirit into all your summer activities. Rainy days have left us and summer is traditionally the time to play. What if we brought a light-hearted spirit into our clubs, into our community relationships, into our families? Perhaps it might become such a habit that summertime will last all year.
Tennyson said, “How dull it is to pause, to make an end, to rust unburnished, not to shine in use! As though to breathe were life!” We can shine wherever we are, in any condition. We can shower affirmations upon the world around us and thrive in the process. Being part of “shower power” means to become aware of anyone who appears to be in need and then shower that person with words of encouragement. Shower power can also mean letting others know the gift they are in your life. How often do we tell the people around us how they have bettered our lives? Words, letters, emails, or other ways of saying, “You make a difference to me” can mean a lot to someone else.
Fred Rogers, better known as Mister Rogers said, “Anything we can do to help foster the intellect and spirit and emotional growth of our fellow human beings, that is our job. Those of us who have this particular vision must continue against all odds. Life is for service.” There is no better time to follow through on this…
