La Habra’s Phillips catches a lot of attention, plus offer from UCLA – Orange County Register

Few Orange County football players enjoyed a better weekend than La Habra’s Clark Phillips III.

The sophomore cornerback emerged as a dangerous ball hawk by returning three interceptions for touchdowns in a 49-14 victory at CIF-SS-ranked Colony of Ontario on Friday night. Then at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Phillips was offered a scholarship by his dream college, UCLA.

Before the weekend, Phillips (5-11, 175) might have been somewhat of an unknown to county football fans. He played on the freshman team at St. John Bosco last season.

UCLA certainly knew Phillips before his breakout performance. The Bruins had been recruiting the class of 2020 prospect but he was still surprised they offered him a scholarship Saturday morning.

“Guess the big game helped,” he said in a direct message via Twitter. “UCLA had been in contact much of the week and complimented (my) work so far, but I didn’t know the offer would come now.”

Phillips has covered some of Southern California’s top receivers the past few weeks. He marked Colony’s touted Michael Ezeike on Friday and earlier faced Mission Viejo’s duo of Olaijah Griffin (UCLA) and Austin Osborne (Washington). Griffin, a senior, committed to the Bruins as a cornerback.

Tough competition isn’t new for Phillips. At St. John Bosco, he was promoted to varsity but didn’t play for the Braves, who won CIF-SS Division 1 and CIF State titles last season.

“It was valuable to work in practice against studs,” said Phillips, who has four interceptions this season.

Phillips’ emergence gives La Habra two of the top sophomores in Orange County. Linebacker Jacobah Fuamatu has impressed with his speed and physicality.

MORE BALL HAWKS

Sonora cornerback Chigozie Anusiem and Mater Dei cornerback Stephon Robins each grabbed two interceptions last week in victories against Bolsa Grande and St. Mary’s of Stockton, respectively.

Cornerback David Blanco of Century (4-0) also had two picks last week in a victory against Saddleback and leads the county with five interceptions.

Blanco and Century play La Quinta (4-0) at Bolsa Grande on Friday in a clash of surprising undefeated teams.
