Judging Grocery Store Ice Cream Treats – Orange County Register

Sandwiches, bars, bonbons and even mochi. While cones are generally the standard, several brands available in grocery stores offer an assortment of ice cream treats.

Among contenders in our newsroom taste test, classics such as the Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake bar and Nestle’s Drumstick earned points for bringing back childhood memories. But newcomers including Coolhaus sandwiches, Trader Joe’s Bon Bons, Snickers Ice Cream and Haagen Dazs bars are winning fans.

Here’s what the Orange County Register’s tasting panel thought of each sweet treat.

Haagen-Dazs White Chocolate Raspberry Ice Cream Bars
Tasters bestowed highest honors on this relatively new bar with a classic elegance. Fresh raspberry flavor and aroma with quality ice cream and chocolate won them over. The chocolate drizzle decoration and an interior burgundy swirl make it pretty enough to serve at an informal dinner party. An 84-gram serving (one bar) has 280 calories, 19 grams of fat and 24 grams of sugar. $4.99 for three bars. (4 stars)

CoolHaus Ice Cream Sammies
We tasted a variety of ice cream sandwiches, including Double Chocolate + Cookies & Cream, Double Chocolate + Dirty Mint Chip and Snickerdoodle + Strawberry Ice Cream. The team loved the big, crunchy, chewy cookies, fresh mint taste, just-right ratio of cookie to ice cream ratio and how cold it stayed (“Freezes hard as a hockey puck,” one taster said). A 54-gram serving (half a sandwich) has 250 calories, 14 grams of fat and 29 grams of sugar. $4.95 for one sandwich at Gelson’s. (3 stars)

Pleasantly chewy, with a deep chocolate flavor in the cookie and couverture, this was the most grown up of the treats because it wasn’t too sweet. However, it lost points with those who didn’t care for dark chocolate and thought it had a bitter aftertaste. A 18-gram serving (one bonbon) has 60 calories, 3.5 grams of fat, 5 grams of sugar. One dozen per box. (3 stars)

Snickers Ice Cream Bars
Caramel, chocolate, ice cream and nuts meld perfectly in this treat that tasters deemed definitely true to Snickers! The ice cream even had a faint nougat flavor, said one, but another quipped that he’d rather have the candy bar. A 48-gram serving (one bar) has 180 calories, 11 grams of fat, 15 grams of sugar. $4.49 for a box of six. (3 stars)

Magnum Mini Double Caramel Ice Cream Bars
More caramel is good caramel, according to tasters who loved Magnum Mini’s sweetness. Detractors thought the ice…
