Joevin Jones not in starting lineup or on bench as Sounders face L.A. Galaxy

The Sounders are sitting out Joevin Jones for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Galaxy, likely for disciplinary reasons after he left the team early a few weeks ago without permission and flew to his native Trinidad to prepare for World Cup qualifiers

(UPDATE: A source confirmed Joevin Jones is indeed sitting out Sunday night’s game as punishment for leaving the team without permission a few weeks ago.)

Sounders left back Joevin Jones won’t face the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday night as his team seeks a critical three points to try to move back atop the Western Conference standings.

Jones returned to the squad from Trinidad and Tobago this week after he’d skipped out early without permission a few weeks back to prepare for World Cup qualifying action. Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer had said this week that Jones would be disciplined internally and would not comment further.

Well, the fact that Jones is sitting Sunday and not even listed as a substitute would seem to suggest punitive action. Unless there is a health issue we are unaware of — and we are — the team is sitting Jones on a night it is also without left back Nouhou after his red card versus Portland and automatic suspension. This is a bit of a risk the Sounders are taking, since they now trail the Timbers by two points in the standings and really do need a win over the struggling Galaxy. But, there’s no real statement in sitting Jones if you are going to pick your spots and wait for a night Nouhou is available to do it.

That means Oniel Fisher gets the start in this one. The Sounders have not fared well in Fisher’s starts this season, but, to be fair, they were also missing several other regulars in those contests. Other than at left back, it’s the usual Sounders starting alignment versus Sigi Schmid and the Galaxy — who held the Sounders to a scoreless draw at Carson, Calif. five weeks back. Victor Rodriguez gets a start out on the left flank, while Clint Dempsey is in the middle despite some speculation he might be rested following national team duty.

Don’t forget, the Sounders are riding a team record 11-game unbeaten streak and have not lost since June.
