SPANISH FORK — The Eagles have been able to start seasons strong, here of late, only to end those same years with a bit of a thud. A lot of that could be chalked up to depth, or lack thereof, and it’s something first-year head coach Nate Porter feels is much better this time around.
Porter has been coaching at ALA for eight years and has become aware of what has ailed the program most years. To that awareness, he’s gone about to fix the traditional problems.
“We have better numbers and we’ve changed the offense and defense to better fit what we feel we can do well,” Porter said. “We feel we’re going to have lines on either side of the ball that can prove to be as big and as physical as any in our region.”
Porter also knows taking on 2A North competition isn’t a picnic, in any given year.
“South Summit is always stacked and they’ve been good for a lot of years and we know Delta has a really big line, and that will be a challenge for us,” Porter said. “The key will be to keep it going heading into region play, because that’s the time of the year when we always seem to fold, for whatever reason.”
Porter believes this year’s team has what it takes to play better in region.
“We’re on the verge,” Porter said. “I’m not hoping for miracles, a state championship — we just want to start with a winning season. We have nine games to get it done, and if we get that fifth win, then that’s progress. Obviously we’d love to do better than that, and we think we can, but right now a winning season is our focus.”
Coach: Nate Porter is in his first year as head coach. He’s coached as an assistant at ALA over the last eight seasons.
