Grilling is often the focal point of Fourth of July gatherings. Flame and food seem symbolic of our country’s joyous mid-summer holiday, the communal fire sizzling everything from bratwurst and burgers to wieners and wings.
I asked Jamie Purviance, author and master griller for Weber, why grilling is so central to Independence Day festivities.
“It’s a totally different dynamic when there is outside grilling; there’s room and inclination to get around the fire and talk,” he said. “In our history fire helped to create civilization, generating conversation and social interaction. It’s wired into our DNA. Around a fire, everybody has an opinion or thought to share.”
