In today’s society, we often believe that it is acceptable to skip certain fundamentals of living a healthy lifestyle. We don’t eat properly, exercise regularly or get enough rest. We’ve become accustomed to running the rat race—eating, sleeping and working on the run. But when we let work, friends and even our families consume us, we end up feeling tired and overwhelmed. This is because we don’t put first things first in our lives.
Many of us suffer the same consequences spiritually. We often neglect companionship with our heavenly Father and His Word, which leaves us frustrated, depressed and confused. The ailments of life are often indicators that something is wrong with us spiritually. Instead of hurrying through life, desperately beating yourself up and suffering from one failure to the next, you should rearrange your priorities. This is the time to back up, slow down and do things in the right order.
Strengthening your personal relationship with God is the only way to renew your mind and overcome your shortcomings. If you could have done it yourself, you would have done it already! “Right acting” will not necessarily produce “right thinking,” but right thinking will produce right actions. So how do you develop right thinking? By getting your mind lined up with the One Who created it.
In Galatians 5:16, Paul offers this advice: “…Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” In our daily lives, we fulfill the lust of the flesh when we hurry, worry and attempt to do everything ourselves, skipping the vital time we need to develop a relationship with God. It is only when we get our minds lined up with God and His Word that we truly put first things first.
