Firefighters battling brush fire at Camp Pendleton – Orange County Register

SAN CLEMENTE — Camp Pendleton and Orange County firefighters are battling a vegetation fire on Cristianitos Road near the San Mateo Campground, according to base officials.

Marine officials shared via Twitter just before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, that the fire was 10 to 15 acres. Just before 8 p.m., the fire had grown to 300 acres, according to a tweet by the base.

The Orange County Fire Authority said they sent a strike team to assist. There are “multiple off base resources” fighting the fire and more are planned, Camp Pendleton said.

“Fire north of Cristianitos Road is heading away from the base,” the camp’s Facebook page shared at about 7:35 p.m. “Multiple fire assets on the ground and in the air are responding both from the Camp Pen side and the San Clemente side.”

As evening fell, planes began dropping fire suppressant onto the blaze.

Base officials added that the blaze was not on the Orange County side but the air support was making “good progress” and more drops were planned.
