Edison, Tustin find out how rough O.C. poll voters can be – Orange County Register

The voters in the Register’s Orange County football top 25 poll can be harsh.

Teams that have a bye week sometimes will be dropped by the voters, who are members of the media, in the following week’s poll.

Edison did not play last week but still was knocked down a notch, from No. 8 last week to No. 9 this week. La Habra, a 49-14 winner over Colony of Ontario, traded places with the Chargers, going from No. 9 last week to No. 8 this week.

Tustin beat Beckman, 23-8, to improve to 5-0, yet the Tillers dropped from No. 14 last week to No. 17 this week.

As for Edison, the Chargers again are No. 11 on my ballot so the drop to No. 9 is fine. I have Los Alamitos at No. 9 because the thinking here is that Los Alamitos will beat Edison this season – they play each other Oct. 19.

The CIF-SS football coaches that vote on the Division 2 top 10 disagree with me – they have Edison at No. 4 and Los Alamitos at No. 10.

The three top teams in the Empire League – Cypress, Pacifica and Tustin – look fairly even so far. The 10-member media panel thinks so, too, and has them grouped near each other in the top 25. Pacifica is No. 15, Tustin is No. 17 and Cypress is No. 21.

Santa Margarita gave Mission Viejo a fine battle last week in the Eagles’ 28-23 loss to Mission Viejo. Being that close to beating the Diablos wasn’t good enough for the poll voters, who dropped Santa Margarita from No. 4 last week to No. 5 this week.

On my ballot, Santa Margarita remained No. 3. The Eagles went toe-to-toe with Mission Viejo and although they did not win they played well against a superb team.

Is Tesoro too high at No. 16? The Titans’ wins are over so-so teams Huntington Beach, which is 1-4, and La Serna of Whittier (2-3). Their losses, though, are to good teams: Edison, El Toro and La Habra.

Fountain Valley returned to the top 25 this week. The Barons’ only loss is to Trabuco Hills, which is at No. 24. Ahead of them, at No. 23 is St. Margaret’s. I had St. Margaret’s at No. 23 on my ballot, although I am not convinced that St. Margaret’s could beat Fountain Valley or Trabuco Hills.

We won’t know for sure if the inclusion of St. Margaret’s in the top 25 is right or wrong until the playoffs. The Tartans will play in CIF-SS Division 7 in the playoffs. That division will have, if they make the playoffs, Canyon, El Modena, Tustin and Yorba Linda in it.

Head-to-head results provide the best information for the media panel, which sometimes needs no results to move a…
