Dr. Gabor Maté, Renowned Addiction and Trauma Expert, Joins The Calo Programs Distinguished Council

Dr. Gabor Mate’

We share the mission to increase the awareness and understanding of the impact of early adverse childhood experiences on society.

Dr. Maté has had a lot of exposure to Calo Programs and after a recent visit to one of their programs said, “I recently had the inspiring experience of visiting New Vision Wilderness, meeting with staff and their young clients. The latter were all young women with troubled histories. I was most impressed by how openly, insightfully, and courageously, after only a few weeks in the wilderness program, these young people shared about themselves and what they had learned. I can’t recommend NVW too highly.”

Dr. Maté has received the Hubert Evans Prize for Literary Non-Fiction; an Honorary Degree (Law) from the University of Northern British Columbia; an Outstanding Alumnus Award from Simon Fraser University; and the 2012 Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award from Mothers Against Teen Violence. He is an adjunct professor in the Faculty of Criminology, Simon Fraser University.

Dr. Maté believes that:

  • the source of addictions is not to be found in genes but in the early childhood environment.
  • emotional stress is a major cause of physical and mental illness.
  • the essential condition for healthy development is the child’s relationship with nurturing adults.
  • AD(H)D is a reversible impairment and a developmental delay, with origins in infancy – rooted in multigenerational family stress and in disturbed social conditions in a stressed society.

“Dr. Maté’s brilliance has allowed for a deeper understanding, by professionals and parents alike, of the impact of stress, early childhood environment, and the importance of nurturing adults on mental health and addiction issues. We share the mission to increase the awareness and understanding of the impact of early adverse childhood experiences on society. His philosophy and approach to healing aligns closely with that of Calo Programs. We are grateful to be able to partner with Dr. Maté to further our shared mission. His work is changing the world.” shared Alex Stavros, CEO of Calo Programs.
