Living in university dormitories or hostels can be a very exciting experience to many students. However as there are no mommies to help clean up the room and toilets, without good hygiene practice in dorm, you will be surprised and irked how dirty and unhygienic your shared new “home” can be. In fact, dirty dorms are known to be potential breeding ground for illnesses.

What do you need to watch out in Dormitories?

Pest

Cockroaches, bed bugs, lice, mites, rats are some of the commonly found pests in student dormitories that are poorly maintained. These pests start creeping into the rooms, kitchen and washrooms if food crumbs, litters and soiled cutleries are not properly discarded and washed. Not only they are unsightly, these irritating creatures are bacteria carriers and can cause harm to your health.

Bed bugs and head lice feed on our blood when we sleep and these creatures like to inhibit in the bedroom. If the adjacent room is infested with these bugs, the nearby rooms are highly likely to get infested too.

Allergens

Commonly found allergen in the student dormitories include house dust mites, cockroaches, mold, pollen, all of which can potentially trigger allergy ailments like asthma, rhinitis, eczema, etc.

Millions of dust mites can be found within a mattress and they thrive even more in mattresses that are dirty. Allergic patients typically are susceptible to fall sick after being exposed to dust mites and their excrement.

Infectious Disease

As dormitory residents are living closely together every day, students can get infected with infectious diseases like flu, bronchitis and even sexually transmitted diseases. Poor toilet and personal hygiene, coupled by common bad eating habits of not washing hands before eating encourage higher rate of bacteria transmission among peers.
