Door County in fall is a magnet for foodies, photographers and fall color enthusiasts of all stripes – from hikers and bikers to golfers, kayakers and tour boat patrons. With its extensive forests draped in brilliantly hued foliage, the bucolic 70-mile peninsula may be at its most scenic from early September through early November.
These vibrant colors are only part of the story, however. In autumn, the county’s orchards burst with ripe apples while its farmer’s markets, harborside restaurants and special events feature a cornucopia of local fare, including apple and pumpkin pies; apple wines and ciders; and squash, zucchini and other fresh vegetables. Through October 22, the “So Delicious, So Door County” promotion highlights the county’s culinary appeal, offering a wide variety of special food and lodging packages.
Food-centric visitors can also sample wines at eight different wineries along the Door County Wine Trail; take cooking classes featuring seasonal fare; sample freshly caught smoked fish or enjoy one of the peninsula’s iconic outdoor fish boils. The county is also home to several artisan cheese makers, brewpubs/craft brewers and a hard cider production tour and tasting room.
Foodies aren’t the only ones who can enjoy the autumnal appeal of Door County, however – art lovers and outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the peninsula every September and October. For cultural connoisseurs, there are more than 100 art galleries and studios, live music performances and award-winning professional theater productions. Door County’s five state parks, 11 lighthouses, stunning shoreline sights and miles of trails bring in hikers, bikers, photographers and outdoor aficionados of all ages. Door County Trolley tours allow visitors to relax and experience the exquisite colors and scenic vistas on a 75-minute tour of the county, while several new boat tours offer a stunning perspective of fall foliage from the water.
Other fall highlights include:
- Harvest Festival, Sturgeon Bay (September 16)
- Autumnfest & Classic Auto Show, Baileys Harbor (September 23-24)
- The Epic Door County Treasure Hunt, county-wide (September 30)
