Diabetic Kitchen Joins the Innovation Hub at the University of Florida

“One of the reasons we have a diabetes epidemic in this country, where 3,835 people a day are diagnosed and one out of three adults are prediabetic, is because the quality of our food supply is atrocious.”

Diabetic Kitchen, which creates and develops low-carb, keto-friendly foods for diabetics and others, has joined the Innovation Hub at the University of Florida, a super-incubator that offers budding businesses inexpensive, state-of-the-art lab and office space for lease.

It joins 24 other startups that receive guidance from mentors with collective decades as executives and serial entrepreneurs. Diabetic Kitchen also has access to resident and community partners who offer legal, accounting and marketing expertise along with the extensive research resources of the University of Florida.

Companies that start in an incubator are four times more likely to succeed than those that don’t, according to Jane Muir, director of the Innovation Hub.

That was one of the key benefits that attracted Diabetic Kitchen, according to Founder and CEO Vic Johnson. “Our category leading products at Amazon have satisfied any questions about our proof of concept and traction. But to move to the next level and beyond we believe the tremendous resources and support from the Hub are critical. We’re excited that they shared our vision enough to admit us to this outstanding group of startups.”

The company’s signature mix for gourmet chocolate brownies has led the brownie mix category at Amazon for much of the time since it was introduced 21 months ago. In addition to being sugar-free and gluten-free, its low-carb and keto-friendly profile is made without artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols.

“One of the reasons we have a diabetes epidemic in this country, where 3,835 people a day are diagnosed and one out of three adults are prediabetic, is because the quality of our food supply is atrocious. We’re on a mission to provide diabetics and others with the ‘real food’ they deserve and need for a healthy lifestyle,” Johnson added.
