Daniel Dae Kim may land another major role after leaving CBS’ “Hawaii Five-0” and being cast in ABC’s “The Good Doctor.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor is currently in negotiations with Lionsgate and Millennium to star in the “Hellboy” reboot.” Kim could replace Ed Skrein after he left the project last month following an outcry over white-washing an Asian-American character.
Kim will play the role of Major Ben Daimio, a rugged military member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Following a supernatural encounter, Ben could turn into a jaguar whenever he is angry or in pain. In the comic books created by Mike Mignola, Ben is a Japanese-American character.
In August, Skrein was cast in the major role in the upcoming “Hellboy” film. But a social media protest, he decided to step down from the project later that same month. “It is clear that representing this character in a culturally accurate way holds significance for people, and that to neglect this responsibility would continue a worrying tendency to obscure ethnic minority stories and voice in the Arts. I feel it is important to honor and respect that,” Skrein said in a statement.
Lionsgate also released their response to Skrein and said, “It was not our intent to be insensitive to issues of authenticity and ethnicity, and we will look to recast the part with an actor more consistent with the character in the source material.”
Meanwhile, Kim decided to leave “Hawaii Five-0” in July after being in the show for seven seasons. According to TV Line, the actor and Grace Park, left the franchise over pay parity issues with their male co-stars. Following their exit, “Hawaii Five-0” executive producer Peter M. Lenkov released a statement expressing his gratitude over working with Kim and Park for several years.
“I will never forget meeting Daniel Kim while still writing the pilot and being certain there was no other actor who I’d want to play Chin Ho Kelly. Needless to say, Daniel has been an instrumental part of the success of ‘Hawaii Five-0’ over the past seven seasons and it has personally been a privilege to know him,” he said.
