BLOMBERG COLUMN: Baseball steroid stain beginning to fade | Area sports

With the selection of Ivan Rodriguez, Jeff Bagwell and Tim Raines for induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, it appears as though the stain of the steroid era and the use of illegal performance enhancing drugs may be fading from the voters’ minds. Many question whether or not this is something to celebrate, including myself.

Of the three players named above, two of them — Rodriguez and Bagwell — were in their primes during the steroid era. While both were suspected of juicing, neither ever tested positive.

Rodriguez, a 14-time all-star with 13 Gold Glove Awards over the course of his 21-year career, gained entry into the Hall on his first attempt. For Bagwell, a 15-year MLB veteran who batted .297 with 449 home runs…
