Basics of team building

A team is a group of people who work together in order to achieve a goal which is common for all of them. There is no magic formula, which can help you create the best team, but you can concentrate your efforts on enhancing the performance of the team through successful team building.

Team building is a term, which is used very often nowadays. Almost every corporate company regardless of its size has realized that team building is extremely important for success. Since all people have different personality traits it is very important for the company to build a strategy that can enhance the productivity of all these different people who have to work as a team. Many companies are now adopting contemporary team building practices in order to create a motivated workforce and develop an atmosphere of trust and support in order to foster organizational learning. There are quite a lot of methods, techniques and principles that can be applied in order to create highly effective teams, but don’t think that building a team is an easy task. One of the methods of team building is based on the group development stages.

Group development stages

In 1965, a model for group development was created and it explained that during the maturing of a certain group the establishment of relationships and the style of leadership may vary a lot. In the team building’s initial stages the leadership style should be with directive nature and as the relationships inside the team starts to progress this style changes into coaching. The leadership style should also follow the model of participative leadership. That means that both the leader and the follower participate and work together for the solution of a problem or to get work done on time. When this phase passes too, the style of leadership should change to delegation.

There are some basic stages into the creation of the perfect team. Here are some of them:

Forming – the team will depend wholly on the leader as the agreement in the team won’t be significant due to the fact that its members won’t know each other. There won’t be any clarity and mostly the leader’s orders will be followed. In this stage, the leader should choose a more direct approach and should answer as many questions as he can.

Storming – the decisions are something that is always hard when in a group. The team members will try to establish relationships between each other. Power struggles are possible and the existence and purpose of the group…
