Anesthesiology, Orthopaedic Groups Award $135,000 Grant to Alexander McLawhorn, MD, and Meghan Kirksey, MD, PhD, of Hospital for Special Surgery for Patient Safety Study

A research grant of $135,000 has been awarded to Alexander McLawhorn, MD, and Meghan Kirksey, MD, PhD, both of the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. The co-investigators received the OREF Perioperative Surgical and Medical Home Patient Safety Research Grant, which provides funding for clinical research to advance breakthroughs in orthopaedic patient safety. The study, Effect of Operative Team Consistency on Patient Safety and Efficiency, will examine the impact of consistent surgical team staffing on patient outcomes following total joint arthroplasty.

Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) president David G. Lewallen, MD, noted that this grant reinforces OREF’s collaborative research agenda, bringing together multiple disciplines that impact the care of orthopaedic patients. “We are excited to partner with prestigious organizations including American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF), the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Cigna Foundation to broaden the perspective of orthopaedic research and encourage a more holistic approach to understanding how to ensure the best outcomes for our orthopaedic patients.”

Funding for the grant was provided by OREF, ASA, FAER, the APSF, AAOS, the Cigna Foundation and individual donors.
