It was a big day for Cunard fans on Monday as the storied line finally announced plans for a new ship — its first since 2010. What will the vessel be like? Cunard is being coy so far about the details, but Cunard lovers no doubt are hoping for something similar to the line’s flagship Queen Mary 2, which immediately became an icon of ocean cruising when it debuted in 2004.

Here, in the carousel above, we offer a deck-by-deck look at the famed vessel, which recently underwent a massive, top-to-bottom makeover.

As can be seen in the photos, the 25-day overhaul of Queen Mary 2 was giant in scope and brought significant alterations to wide swaths of the ship including its restaurants, lounges, spa and suites. The work also included the addition of 50 new cabins, including the vessel’s first singles cabins. Costing more than $130 million, the project was billed as the largest and most expensive undertaking of its kind for Carnival Corp., the parent company of Cunard.

Queen Mary 2 was the world’s largest passenger vessel at the time of its debut and remains one of the largest afloat. Built with a long, reinforced bow that cuts through the waves and powerful engines capable of a speedy 28 knots, it was specifically designed to operate regular trans-Atlantic crossings — a niche that it now has to itself.
