Next time you take a hold of your wine glasses, and think about drinking some of the fantastic New Zealand Wine varieties that are out there on the market, you should consider the history that’s packed behind the wine you drink.
New Zealand wine first started cropping up on the islands during the colonial period. In fact, the very first New Zealand wine producer was a British man named James Busby. Back in the 1830s he started to grow wine in the Waitangi area of the islands.
It was at a much later date that the very first vineyard was founded though. New Zealand wine didn’t spring up with a very good outlook back then. There was prohibition in certain areas – and because spirits and beer were a lot more popular along with dairy and meat produce it made the task of making New Zealand wine a good business venture that little more difficult. When the prohibition was finally lifted the wine still wasn’t very economically viable to make.
That all changed in the 1960s, this is when Britain decided to join the EEC. When they joined up the UK had to drop their favourable business exchanges with New Zealand. This meant that the meat and dairy markets were hit badly and a lot of the farms turned their hand at becoming vineries. By the end of the 1960s the islands saw 24 hour sales of alcohol and wine lovers grew tremendously.
At the start the wine seen pumping out of New Zealand was not very popular amongst wine lovers. But as time went on in the 70s with New Zealanders packing off to parts of Europe to work, their knowledge in wine grew enormously and they learned a lot about the wine industry from France and Italy. This move is what sparked the real boom in the Kiwi wine making industry.
Perhaps the best known wine from New Zealand cropping up in wine glasses around the globe is Sauvignon Blancs. Especially the Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs which has been distributed around the world with great demand. It seems that wine lovers simply cannot get enough of this….
