The Irvine family’s “Big Blue House” sold for $35 million, property records show.
The home, built in 1936, made headlines this week in newspapers as far away as The Royal Gazette in Bermuda when it was revealed that the residence sold in a private sale at the end of July. It was part of a $55 million deal with a contiguous property also owned by the Irvine family’s heirs.
The records now show it was the “Bermuda blue” landmark that commanded the heftier sum.The other house sold for $20 million.
Both homes were sold simultaneously by Rob Giem of Compass; Kim Walker of Surterre Properties represented the buyers.
“The Big Blue House” now is tied at No. 3 for the priciest houses ever sold in Orange County.
The other $35 million sale, at 2692 Bayshore Drive in Newport Beach, was actor Nicolas Cage’s Jan. 3, 2008, sale to Jerry Herbst, owner of Las Vegas’ Terrible Herbst car-servicing chain.
At No. 2 was 171 Emerald Bay in Laguna Beach, selling for $35.5 million in August 2014. A week after that sale closed, the buyer – identified only as Naraja Holdings LLC – paid $10.2 million for the house next door.
And in the No. 1 spot: Twin Points, a Laguna Beach estate set on twin headlands jutting hundreds of feet above the Pacific Ocean. It sold in February 2016 for $45 million.
