Cambridge college to fund students living costs as Government scrap maintenance grants – Telegraph.co.uk

A college at the University of Cambridge is to fund the living costs of students from low-income backgrounds – replacing the maintenance grant recently scrapped by the Government. Undergraduates at St John’s College will be entitled to a non-repayable grant of £9,570 per year, aimed at covering their day-to-day living expenses, if their household income is below £25,000. The ‘studentships’ scheme will initially run for five years, during which the College will assess its effectiveness and financial sustainability with a view to continuing it in the long term.
